FANNIN COUNTY YOUTH WIN IN AREA V AWARDS CONTESTS

Micala Michaud and Makagan Mitchell placed third and first in their respective categories at the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Districts Area V essay contest. Their essays were judged against entries from 41 districts. Both girls won first place in the local essay contest sponsored by the Fannin Soil and Water Conservation District.

The Conservation Awards Banquet for Area V of the Soil and Water Conservation Districts was held May 5 at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX.  Attending the awards dinner from Fannin County to watch Makagan and Micala accept their awards were their parents, Marlon and Traci Mitchell and Mike and Melody Michaud, representing the Fannin SWCD was Chairman Carroll Jones, his wife Chloe and Vice-Chairman Billy Partridge and his wife Peggy. Randy Moore, District Conservationist with the USDA-NRCS, Joe Ward, member of the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and his wife Sandra. Mr. Ward was one of the presenters of awards at the awards banquet.

 This is the second time that Makagan has won first place at the Area V awards contest in the 13 and younger category. She has placed 1st, twice and third once.  Makagan is a 6th grade student at Dodd City Elementary.  She is an active 4-H and Junior FFA member and participates on their show teams with her Braford Cattle, as well as Junior Livestock Judging Teams. She enjoys playing softball and catches for the Texas Zoom team.

 Micala Michaud placed third in the essay contest for 14 and older youth. This was her first time to enter the essay contest and we look forward to seeing more of her essays in the future. Micala is a 14-year-old homeschooler from Bonham. She has belonged to the Bonham 4-H Club for 6 years; and is the 1st Vice President of the club and is the Treasurer on the Fannin 4-H Council. She is involved in several different projects thru 4-H such as Food and Nutrition, Food and Nutrition Quiz Bow., Public Speaking, Forestry and Photography. She would like to pursue a career in archeology combined with photography.

The Fannin Soil and Water Conservation District sponsors the Essay and Poster Contest each year in Fannin County and all youth 18 and under are eligible to enter the essay contests. The poster contest is open for youth 12 and younger. The top three winners in the district essays and poster contests are entered in the Area V contest, this contest draws contestants from 41 counties. Since 2002, the Fannin SWCD has had the honor of having at least one winner in the Area V Contest each year and sometimes two.
